  • First Dental Appointment in Earley: A New Patient Guide

Moving to Earley or looking for a new dentist near Reading? Puresmile Earley Dental & Implants explains how to register, what happens at your first check-up and the worries new patients tell us about most.

    📍 370 Wokingham Road, Earley, Reading RG6 7HT | 🕢 Open Until 7:30pm on Thursdays | 📞 0118 966 9134

Most people who put off finding a dentist aren’t avoiding the check-up itself. They’re avoiding the unknowns: what the dentist will say, whether it will hurt, and how much it will cost. So this guide tackles those worries directly, then covers how to register and what the first visit involves.

At Puresmile Earley Dental & Implants on Wokingham Road, we welcome new patients from Earley, Lower Earley and the wider Reading area, whether you’ve just moved, changed jobs, or haven’t been to the dentist for a while.

Short answer: Your first appointment is a full dental examination. We’ll talk through your health and any concerns, check your teeth, gums and mouth, take X-rays only if they’re clinically necessary, then explain what we’ve found and agree a plan with you.

Eight Worries New Patients Tell Us About, and What Really Happens

    The Worry The Reality
The Worry: “It’s going to hurt.” The Reality: A routine examination is painless. If something is sore, tell us, and we’ll be gentle.
The Worry: “I’ll be told off for leaving it so long.” The Reality: We don’t judge. The first visit is about finding out where things stand and planning from there.
The Worry: “They’ll find loads wrong and want to do everything at once.” The Reality: We explain what needs attention now, what can wait and what your options are. Nothing happens without your agreement.
The Worry: “I’ll be X-rayed whether I need it or not.” The Reality: X-rays are only taken when they are clinically necessary.
The Worry: “I won’t understand what they’re saying.” The Reality: We explain things in plain language, and you can ask questions at any time.
The Worry: “I don’t know if I should go NHS or private.” The Reality: You don’t need to decide before you call. We’ll help you work out which fits what you want.
The Worry: “I’ll be stuck for time.” The Reality: We’re open until 7:30pm on Thursdays and have two off-street spaces at the front.
The Worry: “I’m too nervous to go.” The Reality: Tell us when you book. We offer sedation options and relaxation techniques, and we’ll go at your pace.

    How Do I Register?

Use the “Register as New Patient” form on our private dentist page, or call 0118 966 9134. When you get in touch, mention if you’re in pain, if you’re nervous, and whether you’re interested in NHS or private care.

NHS or Private: A Quick Guide

NHS care is offered to patients who qualify. It covers examinations, X-rays, fillings, extractions, crowns and dentures, with sedation for suitable patients, charged under the NHS’s standard bands. NHS fees change each April, so please check current prices, and ask whether NHS places are available when you call. See our NHS treatment page.

Private care covers more, including cosmetic treatments, Invisalign, implants and hygiene visits. You’ll have a consultation with your dentist to discuss what you want, followed by the checks needed, including X-rays and scans. Then you take home a tailored treatment plan with no obligation to go ahead. Our fees page lists current prices, and we also offer payment plans and a monthly subscription plan, starting from £25 a month, covering check-ups and hygiene visits. Ask us for current details.

    What Happens in the Chair

    • A chat about your medical and dental history, medication and habits
    • An examination of your teeth and soft tissues
    • A gum check, as gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss and easiest to treat early (see our gum disease page)
    • Mouth cancer screening, a routine and painless part of the check-up
    • A bite and jaw check, including your jaw joints (TMJ)
    • X-rays if needed
    • An explanation of what we’ve found and your options

    What to Bring

    • Your medical history and a list of any medication
    • Previous dental records or X-rays, if you have them
    • A note of anything that’s worrying you
    • Proof of NHS exemption, if you’re claiming free treatment
    • A way to pay, for private treatment

    After Your First Visit

If you need treatment, we’ll explain what it involves and what it costs. If all looks healthy, you carry on with regular check-ups, generally every six months, though your dentist may recommend a different interval based on your oral health, age and risk factors. If a hygiene visit would help, we’ll tell you (see our hygiene appointments page). And if you’d like to talk about your smile, we can discuss Invisalign, whitening, bonding or veneers.

    Urgent Problems

Tell us when you call if you have a toothache or a broken tooth, and we’ll aim to see you as soon as we can. If you have spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or feel very unwell, seek urgent medical help through NHS 111 or 999.
